Overview

The Milingimbi Art and Culture Centre is a community owned art centre located in the island community of Milingimbi, 200 kilometres west of Nhulunbuy. Milingimbi Arts supports the long tradition of creative and cultural works including bark paintings, ceremonial poles, carvings and weavings. Many of Milingimbi’s artists both past and present are represented in collections internationally.

In Yolŋu culture, the land, sea, ceremony, songs and art are connected. Milingimbi artists share these connections and stories in unique fibre works, barks, ceremonial poles and carvings. Works from Milingimbi are recognised for their quality and cultural significance and are collected in many national and international institutions.

The centre supports Yolŋu culture and sustainable livelihoods for artists and is a social, cultural and economic hub for the community. Milingimbi Art provides income for many families living in Milingimbi and its regional homelands, supporting Yolŋu from over 12 language groups.

The Milingimbi Art and Culture Centre supports the sharing of ceremonial knowledge across generations through community partnerships including shared natural materials harvesting trips, traditional art making workshops and demonstrations at the art centre.

The centre also offers accommodation on the island at Rulku Lodge for visitors. To enter the community of Milingimbi and visit the art centre a visitors permit is required from the Nhulunbuy Land Council
