Arnhem Land is truly magical year round, but between November and April the region truly comes alive.
Here’s our top five things to do during East Arnhem Land’s tropical summer.
1. Hook yourself an elusive Arnhem Land barra
Ask any local when the best time to catch a famous Territory barramundi would be, and the answer would probably be during the wet season. The wet season covers the periods known as the build-up and the run-off which are classed as the two best times to target the elusive barra and have the chance to snag a spot in the exclusive one metre barra club! You can even try your luck and register for the Million Dollar Fish competition! Check out the fishing tours available in East Arnhem Land here, or read more about the NT fishing seasons here.
2. Catch a famous tropical storm and lightning show
It has long been debated as to which is better, the dry season or the wet season. But no matter what the answer is, the thrilling monsoonal storms are nearly always on the ‘pros’ list for the wet season. There is something special about the relief the rain brings and the brilliant colours that come alive as the earth soaks it in.
3. Take to the air and marvel at Arnhem Land’s magnificent wetlands
There’s something truly magical about seeing the rivers and wetlands of Arnhem Land at their prime during the wet season. The river systems are alive, the abundant wildlife is thriving and the colours of the greening landscapes are indescribable. The best way to experience this natural wonder would have to be by air – contact Air Arnhem or Black Diamond Aviation for scenic flight options departing from Gove Airport.
4. Absorb the epic sunsets
The sunsets over the tropical summer period are next level – believe us! While you could argue Arnhem Land has amazing sunsets all year round, the sunsets over the wet season are particularly beautiful thanks to the colour catching ability of clouds. A few of our favourite places to watch the sun go down around Nhulunbuy include Wirrwawuy (Cape Wirrawoi), Gove Boat Club and Dhamitjinya (East Woody Island).
5. Be captivated by the art and history at Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka Art Centre
On those cosy rainy days where you don’t feel like venturing too far, stop by Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka Art Centre in Yirrkala for your fix of art and local history. Take your time to browse the awe-inspiring gallery and select yourself something special to purchase as a reminder of your time in East Arnhem Land.
There’s no question about it, East Arnhem Land comes alive from November to April. It’s a great time to visit and get a true sense of why the locals love it.
